Somewhere Over the Mirage : Striding across cultural and gaze barriers
Short film strand 1 · 14:00-16:00 Feb 4th 2023
When light rays bend via refraction, a mirage emerges as a displaced image. A naturally-occurring optical phenomenon, however, a hallucinatory view begets questions on seeing. Who are they? Only their vagueness is observed. When curiosity grows, insatiably, the trivia are surveyed more than a simple silhouette of another being living afar. How would they react to things we know or we have never seen? We set off on a long journey traversing continents, cultures, ethnicities, and genders, overcoming the barriers we thought were shatterproof, and discovering many faces much like us somewhere over the illusion.
In this strand of short films, we hand-picked six works by various filmmakers who likewise choose to look at people coping with a seeming plight consequent to cultural and physical relocations, misplaced social expectations and self-identifications. Often the experience of fictional characters resembles the filmmaker’s memory: the story of She Runs(2019) was inspired by Qiu Yang’s childhood recollection of marching band training, a daughter reconnects her father’s memory with photo album in And Still, We Thrive (2021), along with European premieres of de closin night (2022) and PlayHouse(2022), and an LGBTQ short Lucky Fish(2021), we hope these films make the filmmakers' alternative perspective intersecting with cultural, ethics and gender legible to you.
A New Account of Tales: Unfolding Chinese stories of our time
Short film strand 2 · 14:30-16:00 Feb 5th 2023
How do we remember the past? Converting what happened in the past into an account of records, THE HISTORY is as sturdy as words inscribed on stones and trophy cups and those printed on books, but also, HISTORIES are as diverse as they should be for those who ever lived in and thought about China. Revisiting the past, even though time is irreversible, in the present tense, in innovative ways, in dreams— in films as the only resort, new stories shall take shape through recalling, reassembling, and renovating pieces of old tales and scraps from real life. What memories are we building till the last?
In this strand, Mint is presenting five short films made by talented young filmmakers who share a focus on telling Chinese history or culture based stories with the most creative method in filmmaking. A Bright Summer Diary (2020) by Lei Lei, whose films often premiere at Berlinale and International Film Festival Rotterdam, reinvents the mother’s memoir of her past in Lushan. Mint CFF’s only medium-length film The Honor Among Thieves (2019) by Ma Lanhua agilely adopts the tricks found in Méliès’ silent comedies in the adaptation of a tale from the Song Dynasty.
