Curators’ note:
What you can expect from the discussion:
Women have been more than figures on screen, they are audiences, filmmakers, critics, curators and scholars who have been dedicating to the evolutionary process of the narrative, institution and practices of women’s representation in film and off-screen. Women have taken an essential part in our society and our film history, but on screen and behind the screen, women’s voices, labours, and images were not adequately equally expressed, heard and seen from women’s perspectives. By taking action of watching, discussing and curating women’s representation in film, we are engaging with the whole narrative and images of women’s role in our broader society. Since the 1970s, since the global proliferation of film festivals and the rise of the study of feminism and cinema, film festivals have been actively participating in the circulation of the key ideas and important films of women and film. Here, together with our audiences at the Chinese Mint Film Festival, we are proud to continue the tradition of film festivals in taking action for ‘Women’s representation in the film’ by organising the panel, and we are also honoured to have our speakers from the film industry and academia to devote new ideas and inspirational thoughts on the topic.
